self-hosting things
This is going to be short since it's basically my first time writing anything like this.
I have been into self-hosting my platforms and tools for quite some time now, because of my general distrust in major platforms and their privacy policies.
but really mostly just because of the exclusivity and how it feels (very premium fr fr. 🙂↕️)
Honestly, I would love to recommend self-hosting things to everyone and anyone I see, but there are just some things that make it really quite hard. just the steps involved in the process makes it very very unviable and frankly dreadful to the average joe (trust me, I tried).
First, you have to find if there is even an alternative, hopefully open-source, repository for it that you can access.
then you have to see how hard it is to host (usually it really won't be easy)
AND, you have to find a host (hopefully free 🙏) since most people don't really own any spare servers just lying around.
and skipping all the stuff in between,
debugging the thousand errors that come after you host it (ᕗ ͠° ਊ ͠° )ᕗ
(they really don't end (╥﹏╥))
but even after all of that
once (and if) you get it working, whatever it is you are trying to host
There is no better feeling, to be honest.
I would like to expand on this in a lot more detail sometime later
and last but not at all least, tysm to all the devs on open-source platforms that give out their code at no cost and even more to those who make it easy to host and provide documentation ( ╥﹏╥) ノシ
You guys are the best, and I will join your club one day.
